With Valentine's Day around the corner it seems like the perfect time to do a Champagne review. However, I'm not looking at the likes of Moët, Mumm (I can never get passed Meet the Parents), Lanson or Veuve Clicquot, which are ubiquitous on the UK high street. Whilst I do enjoy these Champagnes, they are mass market and what we get in the supermarket is often a low quality to price ratio - that is they don't necessarily represent the best value for money. So today I'm looking at under the radar Champagne Neveux-Rousseau.
Champagne Neveux-Rousseau
Champagne Neveux-Rousseau hails from Jonquery on the right bank of the Marne valley, an area known for the quality of its Pinot Meunier. This seventh generation family vineyard is among the finest Crus in Champagne and is planted with Pinot Meunier (35%), Chardonnay (35%) and Pinot Noir (30%).
This premium Champagne is clean, bright and dry with citrus and fresh apple on the nose; the latter developing into baked apple on the palate with lovely bready hints yet remaining wonderfully dry. There is a high level of fine perlage, which is persistent. This is a lovely balanced Champagne, which will undoubtedly have a broad appeal. It is also Vegan friendly; no animal products are used in its production.
For me, this really offers a high class Champagne at a good price.
